Advising Appointment Booking Information

We recommend meeting with an advisor at least once a year to stay on track with your academic goals.

How to Book an Appointment?

Students can book an appointment through our  to meet with an Academic Advisor. Appointments are available in person or online (MS Teams). Appointment delivery is identified when booking your appointment. 

Appointments can be booked up to two weeks in advance. If no times are available, please check again the next day as new slots open regularly. You may also email your questions or attend drop-in hours.

Students must book their appointment using their @smu.ca email. If you are not a student at SMU, please use your preferred email. 

Academic Advising appointments are private meetings to offer students customized, individual support. This allows students to have discussions unique to their needs. 

Here are some suggestions to consider before attending your appointment:
1. Create a list of questions or concerns you want to ask;
2. Check Degree Works to review your degree progress and what questions you have;
3. Review your academic program/major/minor in the Undergraduate Calendar for information;
4. Review important academic dates and deadlines and Course Registration dates;
5. If you need to cancel or change your appointment, please do so using the link or contact bcomm.advising@smu.ca

What to Expect in an Advising Appointment

Appointments are approximately 20 minutes long and can be scheduled up to two weeks in advance. Students who require more in-depth advising are encouraged to schedule an appointment with an Academic Advisor.

Academic Advising appointments are best used for questions about:
• Review your degree requirements and monitor your progress;
• Plan and sequence your courses that relate to your goals and interests;
• Explore program options, such as major, minors, and certificates;
• Understand university Academic Regulations and processes;
• Help students experiencing academic difficulty and develop a plan;
• Understand transfer credit and Letter of Permission;
• Discover and discuss your education and career goals;
• Develop and use strategies for academic success;
• Identify opportunities to build skills in the university community (e.g. study abroad, Co-op)
• Get support and referrals for academic or personal concerns.

In-person drop-ins, you may sign-up with our administrative assistant in office SB 252. Please have your A Number ready. Students will be met in the order of the sign-up sheet. Students should remain near the advising office while waiting for their turn. If the advisor cannot find you when it’s your turn, you will be crossed off the list.

Online drop-ins will be on Zoom. Currently, a passcode is required to join the meeting. All students will enter the virtual waiting room, and the advisor will admit students into the meeting in the order of who logged into the meeting first. Leaving the meeting and returning may result in losing your place in the queue. Students should make sure their audio is connected while waiting to be admitted.
