French Placement Test

Students must complete the French Placement Test (via Brightspace) before registering for their first French course at SMU. To access Brightspace, students must be enrolled in at least one non-French course. Placement is determined by the test results and consultation with the course instructor. 

If placed in FREN 1111 (Beginners' French, Level I), students should add themselves to the waitlist and the instructor will follow up by email.

Here is how you can access the placement test:

  1. From the Brightspace Homepage, click on Discover on the NavBar.
  2. Find the course listed under All. Click on the course.
  3. The select Enroll in Course
  4. After a few moments, the students can go back to the Brightspace Homepage and the course should be listed under their My Courses section. 

After completing the test and receiving a score, you will see the instructions about the courses you can select depending on your score. The names of the professors teaching the relevant courses can be found on Self-Service Banner. If a given course is listed as TBA, you can contact:
